The set is under construction, the costumes are being fitted, and rehearsals are in full swing as Il Trovatore takes shape for Thursday 30 October Opening Night at His Majestys Theatre, Perth. Restaging Elke Neidhardt’s work is a thrill as we revisit her positioning of the opera during the Spanish Civil War of 1936 – 38. These atmospheric images from our original 2002 production show the grittiness of Neidhardt’s style and her design team. The parallels between the historical contexts of both the original staging and this ‘modernised’ production enhance the drama, and play a fine counterpoint to Verdi’s breathtaking arias and inspiring choruses.
