The shifting whispering sands: https://youtube/watch?v=otfPbF-hseM Cross bedding indicates the direction of sand movement in dune systems. The slip faces form steeper faces, as the sand dune advances. When the wind direction changes the slip faces change direction. Also much of the dunes may disappear during erosion to be replaced by new cross bedding in different directions depending on the wind direction. Such cross bedding can be viewed in the sandstone and mudstones of Caithness formed 370 million years ago when Caithness was 10° south if the equator subjected to more arid conditions. Also cross bedding can be viewed in water deposited sediments.
