The shock of the word “Cock,” causes me spontaneously to sneeze, laugh and choke all at the same time. Bits of mash potato and half masticated sausage meat spray across the kitchen table. Everyone pauses, gobsmacked. With tears in my eyes, and a hand only fractionally late clasped firmly over my mouth, I fly from the table to the bathroom where I finished choking. They all simultaneously burst into fits of laughter in my absence. I was finishing cleaning myself up in the bathroom, when there was a knock at the door. ‘I vonder - eu dis could be?’ says Ben. ‘Jack!’ yells Benjamin, moments later from the other end of the darkened hallway. I turn off the bathroom light, merging with the shadows, as I traipse down the corridor. I had already organised for Maxine to stay over. We had planned on watching a French movie after dinner, so I was somewhat surprised... ‘Mum and Dad! What are you doing here?’
