The singing mermaid of Blackrock: Long ago there were tales of a mermaid who lived just off the north Wirral coast near to Leasowe castle. She would sit at midnight and would sing and comb her hair. She was said to be both irresistible and deadly to young men. A sailor called John Robinson was the last survivor of a crew of men who had been out in their ship in a huge storm. He found the mermaid and invited her on board his ship. By being the first to speak and taking her comb and girdle, he was allowed a wish and said he wanted to meet her again the following Friday. She, in return, gave him a compass to allow him to return to shore. The next time they met, she spoke first and therefore had power over him. She bewitched him with her singing, took back the compass and gave him her ring as a keepsake, saying she would soon see him again. This time, however, he returned home and immediately fell ill. He died exactly 5 days later. There are rocks near Leasowe castle called the Mermaid Stones. If you happen to hear some strange singing if you are ever there, make sure you run away lest the same fate befalls you.
