The single, most important aspect of any wrestlers development is their ability to master the basic skills. Those skills that most wrestlers deem boring are the very tools that separate the champions from the contenders. Watch the best in action, in any sport. Theyre so efficient in the movements that they make any attack look effortless. Their ability to maintain rock solid position and play the take-away game is critical to their success. By holding down the basic skills they begin to limit their opponent from scoring. Imagine that, stopping attacks before they begin! This game of position and attack starts with a strong stance coupled with uncanny balance. If you cannot move with balance you will find yourself out of position more times than not. How do I improve my stance/motion and balance? By waking up every morning a shadow drilling movement. Your movement should reflect a low level stance, chest over your thighs, and feet apart. how athletes think they will move correctly without this position is beyond me. In essence, your stance is your attack/defend position which means you should be able to switch between the two smoothly. Next, continue to work on combining motion with attacks. There is nothing worse than a stationary wrestler who thinks they can be dominant while standing around. Quick feet, darting movements, and continuing the attack after contact must be intertwined. Without those qualities you will surely fail. Maybe not against the average competitor but against the quality opponent you will be doomed. Think about it. Moving targets are much more difficult to strike and you will always be more explosive when you keep your body moving. In reality, this is basic physics. Something that is in motion tends to stay in motion. That should be you! Your chin is your measurement for proper head position. The head must be up, no questions asked. Find an athlete with their chin down and you have someone who has too much weight on their front foot. This brings us back to balance. If I ask you to do a forward roll, the first thing you would do is tuck your chin. By tucking your chin, you help your body to become tight that helps complete the roll. In wrestling, your head should be up. So keep that chin up and the rest of your body will follow suit. It sounds so trivial but watch a wrestler who has their chin in their chest. They cannot penetrate on an attack. They cannot change direction when they need to change over. Simply stuff that separates the best from the rest.
