The skeptical society of St. Louis is about re-examining our beliefs. Please consider the following seriously-- Logically, the eating of animals, and especially the modern industrial scheme by which they are raised and culled, in factory farms and at slaughterhouses, is the greatest ethical issue of all time. 60 BILLION farm animals suffer and die each and every year, living in horrid conditions, at a fraction of their natural lifespan. Even if you believe that the pain, suffering, and death of an animal is 1/10 that of a human, this massacre equates to 6 BILLION people killed every year. The magnitude of this genocide, in deaths and the horrific suffering it causes, is without human parallel. The Holocaust claimed 11 million. All wars of the 20th century, 108 million. Meat-eating claims 60 billion farm animals a year. Ignoring projected growth in herd size by the 10s of millions each year, in just 17 years, and 17 years alone, 1 TRILLION animals will suffer and die simply because of our petty taste preferences. If we skeptics truly intend to act as rational, moral agents, we have no choice but to adopt veganism. To ignore this responsibility is beyond grotesque.
