The skills of reading and writing are essential to the development of imagination. As writers we discover things in the process of writing we would not have done were we merely talking. The physical act of writing is a creative interruption through the body that mediates the minds alacrity and discovers through the senses. As readers, we collaborate with the writer by reinventing his imagination from symbols on the page. This is a remarkable thing, and not to be lost in our culture without serious damage to our ability to problem solve, have empathy, and survive. There is no other activity quite like this. To marginalize it is to damage the culture. The consequences are everywhere. The extreme right in this country would like nothing better than an electorate that cannot imagine change, or resist killing whomever they are ordered to kill.
