The skin develops from the same layer in the embryo as the nervous system (the ectoderm). Ashley Montagu in Touching says the skin is therefore the most exposed portion of the brain. So when we touch skin we also are touching something vastly deeper - in many ways our primary source of information about the world. Recently there is speculation on special aspects of the skin that may be connected with autism - see the attached article!
