The so called honours system can be controversial, with some - TopicsExpress

The so called honours system can be controversial, with some individuals awarded and accepting ‘honours’ some or many would consider to be inappropriate. Compare the following two examples: A French nominee, celebrated economist Thomas Pikkety, who rejected his New Year Légion d’Honneur award, saying the government had no standing to grant such recognition, that it wasn’t the government who should decide who / what is honourable (wise words when it is considered how dishonourable many politicians and so called political leaders are). “I refuse this nomination because I do not think it is the government’s role to decide who is honourable” - Thomas Piketty, 1st January 2015 and Just 3.5 months after he advised the Belfast Telegraph he had not accepted a £16,400 watch when in fact, in breach of FIFA ethics and standards he had, FIFA Vice President and Honorary President of The Irish Football Association (IFA) is awarded (and has accepted) an OBE (which I’m reliably informed does not stand for Officer Breaching Ethics) in UK New Years Honours List. Excerpt from newspaper article September 2014 Former IFA president was unaware that hed received it FIFA vice-president Jim Boyce has revealed that he only discovered a £16,400 watch wrapped up in a bag in his garage last week. The Parmigiani watches were handed out to various representatives (the 28 FIFA executive committee members and representatives from all 32 countries at the tournament) at the World Cup as gifts from the Brazilian Football Confederation. Unlike other officials who had received the gifts, Boyce - a former president of the Irish Football Association - did not return the watch or inform FIFAs ethics committee. Fifas code of ethics plainly prohibits such gifts, said a statement from the ethics committee, which was set up to prohibit expensive gifts or symbols being donated to those in power at the organisation. Boyce will now return the watch when he heads to Zurich for a world summit on ethics in sport.
