The speech in the Polish Institute of International Affairs On the 20th of October Ziyad Raoof the Representative of the Kurdistan Regional Government in Poland took part in the debate devoted to the threat of the Islamic State with experts in Warsaw. The meeting took place in the Polish Institute of International Affairs. This is a state think-tank engaged in the research and analysis in the field of international relationships. It is also considered to be one of the main opinion making institutions in the Central Europe. Besides Ziyad Raoof the Ambassador of Iraq in Poland, many experts from the Institute of International Affairs as well as representatives of the non-governmental organisations such as the Helsinki Foundation of Human rights took part in this meeting. In his speech Ziyad Raoof mentioned that the current strength of ISIS in the region is the consequence of many years of support and the aid flowing from some of the countries of the region to these radical forces as well as inadequate politics and indecisive response of the West to the constant conflicts in the Middle East. The spectacular success of ISIS was also the result of poor governing by Prime Minister Maliki and the extremely poor condition of the Iraqi army. The conclusion of the speech by Mr. Ziyad Raoof was that without the increase of international support, stopping all aid to ISIS, strong support for the moderate opposition in Syria and political agreement in Iraq it will be impossible to fight the so called Islamic State. In his speech Ziyad Raoof also mentioned that one of the consequences of territorial gains of ISIS is a huge humanitarian crisis in the region. Most of all this crisis influences the region of Kurdistan because over 1.5 mln refugees for 5 million inhabitants are fleeing there at the moment. Therefore the KRG Representative to Poland reiterated his appeal for international assistance once again, directing it to the representatives of the non-government organizations presented at the conference in particular.
