The spill of methylcyclohexylmethanol into the Elk River is West - TopicsExpress

The spill of methylcyclohexylmethanol into the Elk River is West Virginia was certainly a disturbing event. There is no doubt that just after the spill levels in the water were high enough to cause problems such as skin rashes and gastrointestinal issues. Now the levels are below 1 ppm, a concentration authorities believe is below the threshold level for any sort of toxicity and people have been given the green light to use the water. The health complaints, however, havent stopped. people are still showing up in emergency rooms and doctors offices with a wide array of complaints they attribute to the chemical. At a concentration below 1 ppm, it seems unlikely that methylcyclohexylmethanol is the cause. What is more likely is that people are attributing normal ailments, such as flu symptoms to the chemical. Also when there is panic, as there is in this case, psychogenic symptoms also appear. The mind can play some awful tricks on the body.
