The story goes that in 1837, “A splendid chandelier” had been provided to the Old Senate Chamber by Cornelius & Son of Philadelphia. Newspapers described it to be “one of the most beautiful things of the kind that we have ever seen.” Only a few months later, however, the chandelier fell down while being lit, breaking several of the branches and the glass shades. Or did it? According to Maryland State Archives Curator Sasha Lourie, research shows that the 1830s chandelier in the Old Senate Chamber may have survived much longer than originally thought. Join us on Thursday, September 4 as Curator Louie discusses the fascinating history, and current restoration, of the most important room in Maryland. This program is part of our Francis Scott Key Lecture Series.
