The strangest job I’ve ever had was in the summer before my college freshman year, when I worked in an office that administered student loans. I was in the “Default Through Death” section; when a student with an outstanding load died, my job was to unstaple their loan package, file one particular piece of paper, and throw the rest away. (This was a zillion years before offices started recycling.) Whenever I got bored (which was, like, all the time) I’d read the section that described how each student died. But for a callow teenager the endless litany of car and plane crashes, fatal illnesses, drownings and gunshot wounds were just abstractions… What was your strangest job?
