The struggle for a Tacoma paid sick leave law is about more than just providing opportunity to thousands of people and making our community healthier. Its deeply personal to me as well. I have a dear friend I used to work with who worked years in minimum wage fast food restaurants. She and her friends were routinely threatened with firing or discipline if they even mentioned calling in sick, or even if they had to leave to take care of a loved one. It breaks my heart that ANYONE would have to endure that kind of humiliation and disrespect. This year, we have the opportunity to make things right for people like her by passing a genuinely progressive law that makes a concrete difference in their lives.
