The sun was nearly ready to slip beneath the forested ridge behind us, and we were in the one corner of Bear Island Lake that could catch its final rays. First, a nearby island was transfixed in a warm yellow glow. We watched in quiet wonder as the color slowly dimmed. Beyond the island, there was one last patch of shoreline open to the sun, and as we approached the final rays of the evening turned the beach into a strip of gold, and the pines behind it reflected a copper fire. Finally, Jenny spoke, quietly. "The Ross Light," she said.
