The teaching of the apostles Ciriac. Did the apostles experience the odor of sanctity like many of the martyrs ( Eusebius History of the Church) and saints and those who witnessed apparitions and those with devotion to our heavenly mother, at Pentecost? And, when the disciples were cast into this perplexity, how they should preach His Gospel to men of strange tongues which were unknown to them, and were speaking thus to one another: Although we are confident that Christ will perform by our hands mighty works and miracles in the presence of strange peoples whose tongues we know not, and who themselves also are unversed in our tongue, yet who shall teach them and make them understand that it is by the name of Christ who was crucified that these mighty works and miracles are done?--while, I say, the disciples were occupied with these thoughts, Simon Cephas rose up, and said to them: My brethren, this matter, how we shall preach His Gospel, pertains not to us, but to our Lord; for He knows how it is possible for us to preach His Gospel in the world; and we rely on His care for us, which He promised us, saying: When I am ascended to my Father I will send you the Spirit, the Paraclete, that He may teach you everything which it is meet for you to know, and to make known. And, whilst Simon Cephas was saying these things to his fellow-apostles, and putting them in remembrance, a mysterious voice was heard by them, and a sweet odour, which was strange to the world, breathed upon them; and tongues of fire, between the voice and the odour, came down from heaven towards them, and alighted and sat on every one of them; and, according to the tongue which every one of them had severally received, so did he prepare himself to go to the country in which that tongue was spoken and heard. Blessed Maria Degli Angeli an 18th Century Italian nun exuded the aroma on a regular occurrence. None of the other sisters in the convent gave off this aroma so the other nuns always knew where Maria was. She in her humility was often embarrassed by it and tried to cover it up with fowl smelling rags to no avail. Sister Giovanna Maria della Croce, at Rovereto Italy when she took her vows as a bride of Christ she put on a wedding ring. As soon as she did the finger with the ring constantly gave off an aroma. Everything she touched gave off the aroma for a spell. As she grew older her entire body constantly gave off the aroma. St Bendicta 1643 AD) said that angels had perfumes as various as those of flowers. It was recorded that she exhaled this aroma. The body of St. Clare (660 AD) gave off the aroma after death which filled Blandina’s church where the body was. When St Hubert of Britanny died in (714 AD) it was recorded that the entire province smelled like perfume. It is also recorded that when St Casimir the patron of Poland who died in (1483) when his body was exhumed one hundred and twenty years later it “exhaled a sweet smell”. During the Marian apparitions appearing toBenoîte Rencurel at Laus which spanned from 1664 until 1718 are accounts describing the huge and perhaps unprecedented manifestations of delicious heavenly aromas. The aroma, “often recounted as a cross between lilies and roses -- but yet more delightful lasted for weeks at a time and covered large outdoor areas. one official, a judge named François Grimaud: During the Easter Season, I smelled a very sweet fragrance for around seven minutes; I had never smelled anything like it in my life, and it gave me such deep satisfaction that I was enraptured. The odor continued beyond the seers death and is still in evidence. According to one account, it was so powerful in the spring of 1690 that the Laus church was pervaded with the fragrance and all the pilgrims attested to it. St Augustine writes “Late have I loved thee, Beauty ever ancient ever new….”, “Thou dist breath fragrance upon me, and I drew in my breath and now do I sigh for thee.” It is not a new phenomenon but was present from the birth of the church. In Eusebius’s history of the church we read about the martyrs at Gaul in 150 AD, “For the first went out rejoicing, glory and grace being blended in their faces, so that even their bonds seemed like beautiful ornaments, as those of a bride adorned with variegated golden fringes; and they were perfumed with the sweet savor of Christ so that some supposed they had been anointed with earthly ointment. Eusebius writes about this as if it was a miraculous occurrence that occurred often in the early church. In the History of the Church he mentioned the odor of sanctity being associated with many martyrs. The odor to those who suffered at Gaul appears to have been a gift of grace and strength; an assurance of the presence of God and their heavenly reward. In the same chapter it says the martyrs were welcomed in heaven by the virgin mother. From the book of Enoch Chapter 24 we read. “Among these there was a tree of an unceasing smell; nor of those which were in Eden was there one of all the fragrant trees which smelt like this. Its leaf, its flower, and its bark never withered, and its fruit was beautiful.4. Its fruit resembled the cluster of the palm. I exclaimed, Behold! this tree is goodly in aspect, pleasing in its leaf, and the sight of its fruit is delightful to the eye. Then Michael, one of the holy and glorious angels who were with me, and one who presided over them, answered,5. And said: Enoch, why dost thou inquire respecting the odor of this tree?6. Why art thou inquisitive to know it?7. Then I, Enoch, replied to him, and said, concerning everything I am desirous of instruction, but particularly concerning this tree.8. He answered me, saying, That mountain which thou beholdest, the extent of whose head resembles the seat of the Lord, will be the seat on which shall sit the holy and great Lord of glory, the everlasting King, when he shall come and descend to visit the earth with goodness.9. And that tree of an agreeable smell, not one of carnal odor, 1 there shall be no power to touch, until the period of the great judgment. When all shall be punished and consumed for ever, this shall be bestowed on the righteous and humble. The fruit of this tree shall be given to the elect. For towards the north life shall be planted in the holy place, towards the habitation of the everlasting King.10. Then shall they greatly rejoice and exult in the Holy One. The sweet odor shall enter into their bones; and they shall live a long life on the earth, as thy forefathers have lived; neither in their days shall sorrow, distress, trouble, and punishment afflict them. Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied about these people when he said, Look! The Lord has come with countless thousands of his holy ones. Jude 1:14 But, as it is written: That eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither hath it entered into the heart of man, what things God hath prepared for them that love him. 1 Corinthians 2:9
