The teams that win are the teams that prepare. This includes individuals! To compete at their best catchers must be familiar with their surroundings. This includes how hard the field is compacted, what type of backstop and how far back the backstop is. Take time before the game to walk to the back stop and inspect it for sharp edges, and other damage. If you see something that could interfere with the play of the game or your personal safety, stop and get your coach involved and notify the umpire. Underhand a couple of pitches in the dirt to the backstop and observe how the ball reacts and deflects. Practice slides to the backstop if its far away... We normally have catchers charge the ball and and make the throw back to the pitcher. Danielle makes the decision to run back on this play as the backstop was close. She is able to get back to the plate the same time the pitcher arrived and make the out.
