The term “QWERTY” is the name of the standard typewriter and computer keyboard in the United States. The word is from the first six letters (upper left) of the keyboard. The QWERTY keyboard layout was based on designs from the 1870s and 1880s, but the term was first used in 1929. The keys were laid out to reduce jamming in typewriters when common letter combinations, such as “sh” and “ck,” were used.
