The territory in which the events of Old Testament history took place is somewhat circumscribed in the light of our modern world. The whole world known to these people contained less than one-half the land area of the United States, and fully one-third of this was desert. In general it consisted, of the territories of ancient Mesopotamia (modern Iraq), Syria, Palestine, and Egypt. Palestine, the real homeland of Hebrews, was the little land in which most of the events recorded in the Old Testament occurred. Because this was their homeland and because of its unique geographical features, we are considering it in some detail in this chapter.
