The thing about the food bank is that it is demeaning by its very nature. One must be so destitute that they confine their schedule to fit the service, only to be graded by your peers receiving this service silently. Ego is surmountable so you persist out of need and take it with a hard nose and upturned chin. But the worst is yet to come. Once inside a personal shopper fills a cart with an array of goodies that ignite a sort of inspiration for creative future meals. Yes you concern yourself with this idea instead of feeling disheartened at the selection being presented. You will optimistically make do. Besides, look how good you even have it, this cart is abundant with calories and nutrients. But that hope wont hold long. Youll pack and unpack repeatedly transpirting these goods from their shelves to yours. But as you do so, youll notice little flaws. Specks of rot or mold on produce. Products with dates reading months past their expiry. Youll ask yourself first, is this food safe? And second, well what do you expect the glue children of the India trash heaps eat? Wouldnt they be overjoyed? Besides, arent those packaging dates exaggerated by the FDA to decrease citizens from stockpiling food? That food is still good if its sealed, right? You may even come to further suspicion of the food when a flu like stomach bug runs through your household. It may not happen for some time, but eventually you will come to a realization. This society is sick. In a moment of need, despite maintaining employment to a degree of being ineligible for public food or health benefits, you reached out to society, you said, Please. I work hard. Im trying my best. I dont receive any other help, I just want some food for my family. Please, I have humbled myself enough to make time to come here, and I ask, please. In return their reply is this: Here. This is what we dont want. We have warehouses full of unquestionable food. That isnt for you. You arent worthy of that.
