The thing about the warning siren is that it sneaks up on you at first. You hear it, a little distant, and pause. Is it for real, or is it some street noise? In a couple of split seconds, the wail grows louder, surrounding your neighborhood and your building and your apartment, and your brain accepts it: yes, its for real! The great scream coming from the sky fills all the air and urges you to run! run! and you run. In the safe room, you hear explosions out there. And wonder how close the rockets fell.
