The thought occurred to me that there are approximately 9 billion people in the world. Out of those nine billion, only one person has a brown Labrador named Homer who keeps his masters property clear of cats and unsavory mongrels. If a chicken gets loose and refuses to graciously return to her coop, Ol Homer will chase it down, and hold that chicken in abeyance until the master can grab it by the legs and throw in over the fence. I am that master, the one man chosen in all this world to have Ol Homer for his dog. I am an honored man. Yet, as a Christian who has some acquaintance with the Bible, I am caught between my American love for dogs and the Bibles definite dislike of dogs. There are at least four prophecies of dogs eating the remains of accursed enemies of God. Paul refers to those who insist that Christians must first be circumcised as those dogs, those mutilators of the flesh.... And Psalm 22, that great psalm of which part was quoted by Jesus in the midst of his dying on the cross, Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet. Yet when any of us hug our pet, and feel his/her affection and loyalty, as I do, it is impossible to think of our dog as a villain. Rather, when God finished his creation, on that final sixth day, looked over all he had made, he concluded, including the canines, It is very good. So, to me and my family, despite the fluffs of fur left in the hallway, and the ferocious bark he levels at strangers on my porch, Ol Homer is a gift and as a member of Creation, very good.
