The three day National Conference on “Child and Adolescent Mental Health” concluded on Sunday the 28th September 2014. The Conference was organized by the Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences Jamshoro in collaboration with Pakistan Pediatric Association, Sir Cowasjee Institute of Psychiatry and Pakistan Psychiatric Society. Eminent Psychiatrists from all over the country including Prof. Mowadat Hussain Rana, Prof. Unaiza Riaz, Prof. Badar Junejo, Prof. Moin Ahmad Ansari, Prof. Mazhar Malik, Prof. Syed Sultan, Prof. Haroon Ahmad, Prof. Mubashir Hussain Malik and Maj. Dr. Shahab Muhammad shared their views during the Conference. While addressing at the Concluding Session the Chairman Organizing Committee Prof. Moin Ahmad Ansari expressed that mental health is a right, not a privilege. For millions of mentally ill people around the world, this is not the case, for them mental illness is a world of poverty, stigma and isolation. We can build a world that mentally ill people feel proud to live in. He added that it’s important to recognize and treat mental illnesses in children early on. Once mental illness develops, it becomes a regular part of your childs behavior and is more difficult to treat. Children need to have a good mental health status if they are going to live up to their full potential and truly live a life that is filled with positive experiences and the willingness to do what is best for themselves and the people around them. Guest of Honor Prof. Muhammad Akbar Nizamani expressed that some children may also be born with mental health issues. These issues are a product of nature rather than nurture so the child may have a more difficult time dealing with his or her emotional state. Many children just naturally feel depressed or have anxiety issues. When these issues are not dealt with in the proper fashion, the children tend to have lower self-esteem and they struggle in the educational environment. The Chief Guest Prof. Mubashir Husssain Malik expressed that there are a myriad of factors that can impact a childs mental health status, both positively and negatively. Providing Children with an environment that demonstrates love, compassion, trust and understanding will greatly impact a child so that they can build on these stepping stones to have a productive lifestyle. He added that some children have to deal with a childhood that is filled with angst, resentment, hatred, distrust, and constant negativity. They have a difficult time coping with their emotions. These children will usually make excellent candidates for mental health programs. It is a difficult process for any person, let alone a child, to overcome such adversity but being proactive and doing all that you can for the child will at least help their mental health in some positive fashion.
