The tragic suicide of Robin Williams is a sad reminder of a very real illness that is more common than many realize. I have been there. I went through my own hell of severe depression. In retrospect, Hell would have been a welcome improvement. And yes, there were times I thought the world would have been better off without me. It is a horrific, cold, lonely and desperate place. An analogy I have used many times to try and explain it is what I call the storm cellar effect. Imagine somebody shoving you unexpectedly into a cold, dark storm cellar and then lock you inside of it indefinitely. Sit in the dark long enough and your eyes and mind start to play games with you. You feel alone. You feel unloved. You have no idea when you will see light. You lose hope. Depression works the same way. It is a vicious cycle of self doubt, fear, anger, hurt, relentless insecurity, despair...and you blame one person for all of it- yourself. You dont hear the pleas from loved ones. You only hear a nasty voice inside of you saying that youve become a burden to those around you. There are many like Robin who lose this battle. Sadly they dont realize that by ending their own pain they create heartbreak for many more. Depression is real. I thank my family, friends and God everyday for making sure I didnt give up.
