The true meaning of the Rich man and Lazarus. First of All it is indeed a parable, no one looks up from a grave and sees anything, and the word hell simply meant GRAVE. St.Lk. 16, 19-31. There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich mans table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abrahams bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my fathers house:28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead. The rich man is Israel they had the flesh covenant with God and the blessings of God. Lazarus is the Gentiles they had no access to God and the only blessings they had was what spilled over from Israel hence the crumbs. Abrahams bosom is the promise of the Kingdom of God which was to come, and is here in our time. Lazarus(the Gentiles) was carried into that promise. The rich man(Israel) died and notice what it says, He was BURIED! and in Hell (the grave) he lifted up his eyes being in torment and seen Lazarus(The gentiles) afar off in Abrahams bosom(the promise of the Kingdom) And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my fathers house:28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead. The rich man(Israel) Cried Father Abraham have mercy on me send Lazarus(the gentiles) that he may dip his finger in water and cool my tongue. The toment in flame is simply the frustration at having missed the Kingdom of God! But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.Eph.2, 11-14, Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; The middle wall of partition was the great gulf between Israel and the Gentiles and it was the old covenant that separated them! The rich man(Israel wanted Abraham to send Lazrus to warn his people, he thought if one from the dead warned them they would listen. 30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead. What was the mans name that Jesus called forth from the tomb? LAZARUS! And Jesus rose from the dead and have they been persuaded? Not so much, Hicky.
