"The truth is that Senator McCarthy was getting uncomfortably close to the actual Soviet Communist spies—so close, in fact, that the Communist Party decided they had to do something about what they saw as the McCarthy problem. The invoking Fifth Amendment Communists he had called before his Senate hearing committee indeed proved to be operatives of the Soviet Union’s Communist Party. Did America learn from history? The answer is a resounding NO, proving once again the bigger the lie the more likely people will believe it, and the more you repeat a lie the more believable it becomes until it finally becomes accepted as fact. You don’t believe it? Just recently on Fox News I heard a Republican claim that we have to be careful with our investigations of the so-called “Phony Scandals” or we will be accused of “McCarthyism;” and this in the shadow of the historical evidence that McCarthy was right all along.
