The unacceptable high levels of unemployment in Waterford is depressing. I spoke to a number of workers today from Honeywell who are devastated at the 74 jobs lost. There is no good reason why unemployment is so high. The city and county has a lot to offer. We have the people, the skills and the ability to do better. We are being held back by a failure of the political system to give us the tools we need. The closing of the IDA regional office in Waterford, the lack of a clear focus from the enterprise agencies, the fact that public spending on a per capita basis is below the national average, the abolition of the city council, the less attractive state aid rates and the failure of some neighbouring counties to recognise Waterford City as the capital, economic engine and Gateway city of the region are all products of a lack of political leadership. When are we going to wake up and say enough is enough?
