The unpardonable sin Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. (Matthew 12:31-32 KJV) And whoever may speak a word against the Son of Man it shall be forgiven to him, but whoever may speak against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this age, nor in that which is coming. (Matt.12:32 YLT) I was invited to speak to a church this past Sunday and this was the topic I spoke on. This passage is VERY misunderstood and misused and has robbed countless people of their peace and caused many to doubt their salvation. Here are several reasons why: 1. People take this passage as being in operation today rather than specifically to the people Jesus originally spoke these words to during His earthly ministry which was ONLY to the lost sheep of the House of Israel (see Matt.15:24). 2. Many pastors misuse this passage when speaking about salvation. In other words, the passage is completely taken out of context. 3. When translated into English, the Greek word aion (which means age) was rendered as world. As a side note many false doctrines and confusion have resulted due to the inconsistent translating of the Greek word aion. This has also obscured the scriptural fact that there are ages of time in Gods program of reconciling creation. 4. Typically, no distinction is made for God setting aside Israel (temporarily) when Israel nationally rejected their Messiah in the late Acts period. 5. Most do not make a distinction between forgiveness and the ultimate justification of all through the righteous act of Christ (Rom.5:18) which will see its fulfillment at the end of the ages (1 Cor.15:21-28).
