The untold story of the Malaysian jet that was shot down: THE CURE FOR AIDS MAY HAVE BEEN ON THAT PLANE The HIV/AIDS research community is shattered by the loss of up to 100 HIV researchers and advocates who were aboard the Malaysian airliner shot down over Ukraine yesterday. The researchers were en route to the AIDS 2014 conference in Melbourne, Australia, which starts on Sunday. It’s a devastating blow to the research community, now mourning the tragic loss of many friends and brilliant colleagues, including Joep Lange, the former president of the International AIDS Society (IAS). The number of researchers killed has not been confirmed, according to The Guardians report. “There’s a huge feeling of sadness here, people are in floods of tears in the corridors,” said Clive Aspin, a veteran HIV researcher. “These people were the best and the brightest, the ones who had dedicated their whole careers to fighting this terrible virus. It’s devastating.” Prof. Richard Boyd, director of the Monash Immunology and Stem Cell Laboratories, said, There were some serious HIV leaders on that plane. This will have ramifications globally because whenever you lose a leader in any field, it has an impact. That knowledge is irreplaceable.” Colleagues and friends are still trying to absorb the magnitude of the loss. Trevor Stratton, an HIV/AIDS consultant, told the ABC: “The cure for AIDS may have been on that plane, we just don’t know. You can’t just help but wonder about the kind of expertise on that plane.” theguardian/world/2014/jul/18/aids-conference-says-100-researchers-may-have-been-on-board-crashed-plane
