The usual first-line approach most people take when constipated is to increase dietary fibre from healthy wholegrains such as from wholemeal bread, high bran breakfast cereal and the like. Study finds that this can actually cause a bigger problem. The fibre found in wholegrains such as wheat and barley is insoluble and harsh to the digestive system whereas soluble fibre found in fruit and vegetables is more beneficial.
