The varna system was not a caste system currently defined today - TopicsExpress

The varna system was not a caste system currently defined today but a class system in which each and every person was distributed in 4 classes( Brahmin, Kshatriya etc) due to their innate personality and expertise. This system was also very lenient also. Dronaachrya(aacharya=teacher) was a Brahmin but fought in Mahabharata. Even Kings sometimes abandoned all their wealth and luxuries to be become Brahmin and it was allowed if you were willing to abandon.
