The ver.di trade union had called for a one-day ‚Warnstreik‘ - TopicsExpress

The ver.di trade union had called for a one-day ‚Warnstreik‘ (warning strike) at the Charité in Berlin today on March 17. Ten wards had announced to shut down completely. Employees from more than fifty wards had announced their participation in the strike. This would have resulted in minimal services at one of Europe’s largest university hospitals. As a result the employers called for arbitration. Workers are calling for a minimum personal-patient quota – a demand for more personnel. This demand flows from the daily experiences of care in neoliberalism. Care personnel compensates for the lack of personnel while the number of patients per employee steadily rises. The demand is a qualitative leap forward. It unites the fight for „good work“ and demands social recognition for this female-dominated labour. More personnel means less burden, stress, and overtime. More personnel means that care workers could potentially assert their trade and grade once again. Unfortunately it did not come to a warning strike on Monday yet employees and their supporters organised solidarity actions and ramped up the public pressure.
