The very 1st time I rode between the train cabs was back in the summer of 1984. Back when everybody and my mama wasnt paying their fare, jumping the turnstyles at Jackson Avenue train station in the Bronx, NY. AAAAhhh that kind of rebellion. Freedom...wildness. Head bands, wrist bands, sweat, Muslim oil, Converses, Pro keds, Pumas, Adidas...healthy skin & hair. Elders. Nourishment. Latinos, music and here come the 5 train. Sun shining, walking through the train cabs to get to the back of the car. Smelling like reefer herb... Ironically someone in the last seat with cutoff dungaree shorts is playing Peaches & Herb on his boombox. My mom signaled me to follow her as I watched her hands grab the handlebars on each side of the train cab. Her eyes carried a secret. I followed and we rode smiling and laughing through danger, excitement, adventure...Life. A piece of my mothers life, breaths inside of me. A piece of that moment, even my life, warms my mothers soul. A sublime exchange. I smile because Life is so much grander than we think & know. :-)Darcel Turner
