The victory for the US Mens National Team may not have been on the score board yesterday, but it the VICTORIES came in many other areas that have made and will continue to make an impact on American Soccer. The performance by the team and the ability to advance from the Group of Death brought unprecedented focus to the team and the sport by national and local media. How many of your local news stations and newspapers all but ignored soccer over the years, yet now were reporting on the team? Fantastic! Unprecedented PUBLIC viewing parties throughout the country...never happened before in so many different places across the U.S.! Unprecedented fan support in the stadiums provided the team with a home field advantage in Brazil...stupendous! It is unprecedented that an entire generation of young players are now being immersed in the game via TV, social media, cell phones, MLS, internet, radio, newspapers etc... It is this young generation of athletes that are totally surrounded by the game that have hopefully felt the highs and lows of this WC and hopefully make the game part of their lives, part of their culture. It will be these players that will grow up and not move onto another sport for batter opportunity. Instead, they will continue to play and develop creativity, technique, vision, and a passion for the game so that in the not too distant future, they will be legit contenders for the World Cup. The sleeping giant has been awakened. Weve heard it before. All the pieces of the puzzle are finally in place. It will happen! The current US Mens Team and those that came before them in the last 24 years are all to thank for making that sort of impact. Again, to quote Bob Ley and his post game comments on the telecast last night, yesterday made you feel , Spent but proud.
