The weather sirens in Monroe City can be sounded either from the dispatch center or from handheld radios. Every attempt is made to ensure that the PL tone used to sound the sirens from a handheld radio is not used by any other jurisdictions near us, but on a calm night radio waves can travel quite a distance. Small airplanes have also been known to key their mic & set off storm sirens if conditions are just right.
