The week that the actor Philip Seymour Hoffman died alone on his bathroom floor from a heroin overdose, with the needle still in his arm, my friend Trip wrote, Heroin is the sauce of devils. It promises, then imprisons. Anyone whos kicked it for even a while deserves a crown. Heroin use is on the upswing, particularly, and surprisingly, in rural areas across America, including my little corner in Maine, and in Vermont, Tennessee, Colorado and also, of course, in our cities. Heroin is bad. It is a dangerous drug. It kills or confines, and for addicts who make it to, and stay in recovery, it remains a challenge. Today I will not use. And that goes on daily for decades. Why start? A thousand reasons and one reason: it all comes down to pain - physical pain for some who get hooked on oxy and then find it cheaper and easier to ride on heroin - or emotional pain and the need to mask inner pain. My advice? Dont start. You might like it, and then where will you be? Addicted and caged in a hell on earth. Dont start. Dont try it. Keep away. (It) is the sauce of devils. It promises, then imprisons. Addiction is a disease. Some are born with a genetic tendency toward addiction. Dont judge the brokenness of another, when your brokenness is plain to see.* Lets Pray: Dear God, keep us from temptation, stop us from starting, give strength to those in recovery, and give right direction to those on the needle.
