The weekend started out great with my bands gig on Thursday night but thing got ugly on Saturday at the Folklife Festival by the Space Needle. As soon as I arrived it was beyond packed and I was walking behind this guy who was yelling out stuff about the bible and how hed kill every fer at the festival. He was a total psychopath and had a backpack which made me nervous. I couldnt help but think about my friends and acquaintances who were gunned down at the Racer Cafe two years ago by another evil maniac. The crowd thinned out as we reached the beer garden I was meeting friends at. There were three kids around 12 y/o hanging out on a strip of grass (two girls and a boy) and the guy steps up to them all irate, waving his bible and starts yelling that the bible says Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. They were like - yeah whatever you say - scared. He steps up to the boy, towering over him - fists clenched. I run over, push the guy back and say leave the kid alone. He turns toward me and says, Oh, you! then punches me in the nose and glasses and steps off. The kids take off running and two plain clothes security guards approach and tell me everything is fine - theyre following him and have called the police. its ok - hes just mentally ill... I was like arent you guys getting paid to protect the public and the ones who should have stepped in? I got a deviated septum out of it but was glad to take a hit for a kid who could have gotten it much worse. I used to bring my guitar to Folklife and jam with amazing bluegrass pickers and it was all peace, love and granola and music. Not any more. Happy Memorial Day. God bless the troops.
