The whole immigration issue is really driven by corporate greed. From the 50s through the 80s, the US government systematically toppled democratically elected governments throughout Latin America in order to protect US business interests. The first such incident set the trend: the CIAs 1953 removal of the democratically elected president of Guatemala, Jacobo Arbenz. Similar actions were subsequently carried out in Nicaragua, El Salvador, Chile, Argentina and Honduras. Next, illegal immigration was encouraged because it provided a cheap source of labor for corporate interests. A recent example of this is the illegal immigrants hired by Halliburton to work on the hurricane cleanup in New Orleans. And it turns out that the Obama administration actually enables such activity by reducing fines paid by companies found guilty of employing illegal immigrants. And finally, the new policies of deportation represent a windfall for private prison companies like Geo Group (formerly Wackenhut). The surge in deportations has benefited companies such as Boca Raton, Florida-based GEO Group Inc. (GEO), which runs prisons in five countries. ICE accounted for 17 percent of the company’s $1.48 billion in revenue last year, up from 11 percent of $1.04 billion in revenue in 2008, according to company filings. (Disregard the misleading headline.)
