“The whole process of nature is an integrated process of immense complexity and it is really impossible to tell whether anything that happens in it is good or bad.” I heard these words from this short video and I thought of a late-September morning from over thirty years ago. I picked red peppers in the field out front with my grandmother. While filling our baskets, I saw a ladybug struggling in a dew-soaked web. A huge and long-legged spider stood nearby, waiting still the way spiders do. Reaching in with a stem that I had snapped, I tried to help the ladybug who struggled to be free. “Let it be,” my Danna said. “The spider needs to eat, just like you and me.” She was right. My mind raced with thoughts of the natural world around me and how entwined it all is. I already loved nature, but that was the day I fell head-over-heels in love with the really big picture, of which each thing we see is only a small part.
