The woman in the 10 items or less queue in front of me at sainsburys had 14 items. I counted the seconds in my head as the cashier swiped every excess item and they accumulated to 7 extra seconds and then the woman took an extra 3 seconds to place these items in her carrier bag. These timings were wholly approximate as I cannot be sure my counting was precise. I did use the hippopotamus method where I said hippopotamus inbetween each consecutive number. The woman did not even apologise to me for holding me up in what I thought would be a quick queue.
