The wonderful thing about the Newcastle Poetry Prize is the anthology of the shortlisted poems published every year. This can be a goal of any entrant - to be shortlisted. Enter here: hunterwriterscentre.org/newcastle-poetry-prize.html Enjoy the Australian humour in this excerpt from the 2004 winning poem by Peter Kirkpatrick: Reaching a scenic ridge, my gumnut chums crack open bottled water and bask in the inner glow that comes from having done what they set out to do. They look out on a cow-pocked countryside homogenised by hobby farms, where silks and sawbones rest their city-jaded brains and bank accounts in sunny pleasure domes or health resorts, and village life survives in Country Road and Rivers, R M Williams and the gleam of four-wheel drives outside the boutique bakery.
