The word ACADEMIC (French, “scholarly, related to education”), - TopicsExpress

The word ACADEMIC (French, “scholarly, related to education”), with its implication of grandeur and pompous arrogance, has given rise to a neologism: Academese. If you speak Academese, you join the ranks of those who use rare words in convoluted sentences. Trying to write as an academic often means bridging the gap between Academese and “normal” English. When academics write only for each other, it can look like a contest over who is trying hardest to confuse others. No wonder the expression “that’s just academic” has arisen, implying that something is merely theoretical! When it comes to language, bridges are superior to barriers.
