The word ”amateur” comes from the latin ”amare”, to love. In modern use we mostly apply it to one who does something without requiring money for it. An amateur astronomer is therefore one who observes (or at least studies) the celestial phenomenae because he loves to do it, not for the money he in some rare cases can get for it. We in this group all benefit from other amateurs works, just behold the beautiful photos some members share or the knowledge that they give us. One who is an amateur in this sense is Andrew Johnson who has compiled a star atlas with stars down to magnitude 7.25, complete with more than 550 DSOs. Every astronomer needs a star atlas but the best ones do indeed come at a price. These days we can do well with planetarium software such a Stellarium stellarium.org/ but I still prefer to plan my observations from printed sheets. If you are anything like me, here you will find Johnson’s star atlas for free download: cloudynights/item.php?item_id=1052
