The word “mile” comes from the Latin “mille”, meaning thousand, and a mile was 1,000 Roman strides. Now a mile is equal to 5,280 feet or 1,760 yards or approximately 1,609 meters. The mile became “The Mile” near the end of the 19th century when professional foot racing became the most popular sport in England. Finally in 1954, Roger Bannister of Great Brittan cemented the Mile’s place in history with the first sub-4 minute Mile at 3:59.4. Many experts thought it was an impossible, if not a deadly, barrier to break and to this day, Bannister’s iconic mark is the watershed moment for the Mile.
