The world is getting smaller and information is getting more - TopicsExpress

The world is getting smaller and information is getting more abundant. Many years ago, life consisted of taking care of your crops, your neighbors and your family. You were lucky to voyage into the village over yonder. You learned at a pace suitable for the times. For those with an inquisitive mind, you’d take in stories from your grandparents explaining how they survived during those harsh times. You learned from their mistakes. If you were lucky, you could riffle through volumes of Encyclopedias (to only be more confused with the words that made no sense to the average person). You were protected from the cruelties of life that no child could fully understand. No longer are those days. Today, with technology, the world seems to be getting smaller. In today’s world, we have the whole world at our fingertips. We can view the streets of cities across the ocean in places we’ve never even set foot in. We can video chat with loved ones overseas. Information comes in leaps and bounds via the media, schools and even worse, via the internet. The internet provides us with answers to ANYTHING one can imagine. Even things that you wouldn’t deem possible. Our kids are exposed to this. As time progresses, I hear more and more about child suicides. Gee, could it be that they are overwhelmed? They are overwhelmed with the responsibility that we’ve thrown at them. They are too young to comprehend some of the things that they see or hear about. They are too young to handle the responsibility of having all this information. As I sit here, I can’t help but feel pain for the children of today. There was once a time, when children took on the responsibility based on maturity. Parents were their teachers. Parents protected them. How do we protect our young today? They are less mature and yet have more responsibilities. For those that really know me, you know that I love gadgets, I love technology and I bask in the ability to get new information or learn something new and that’s how I brought my kids up. I’m just now wondering if all this is too much for our children. I certainly don’t have an answer but I do wish we could turn back time.
