The worst road junction in Hyde [well, I think so], Mottram Old - TopicsExpress

The worst road junction in Hyde [well, I think so], Mottram Old Road and Stockport Road. The triangle of grass on the left used to have houses and shops on it up as far as the steps. Ive never seen photos of it as it was, but does anyone remember it? On the Stockport Road side there was a grocery shop belonging to Mr Hulme and at the side of it was what we called the secret passage which led up to Mottram Old Road. It was a series of steep stone steps and at one point there was a pump which presumably had given water at one time. Next door to Mr Hulmes shop was a house where Mary Harrison lived; Mary ran the wool shop next door to Stanneys. To the left of that were 3 or 4 cottages with long front gardens, one of which served as a clog menders at one time. The Cloughs lived in one of these cottages and a Miss Bertha Masser in another. Up the steps and onto Mottram Old Road were quite a few cottages and Mrs Taylors sweet shop - she had a sign outside for Lyons Maid Ice Cream and Mivvi lollies. I think the buildings on that plot were cleared around 1968 or so, around the time when the queen visited Hyde.
