The writer is missing a key point. At so-called elite schools, you are immersed in a high concentration of exceedingly bright, driven, intellectually curious students whose emphasis in college is intellectual growth over football and partying. The overall atmosphere is much more stimulating than that at schools where sports and having a good time often trump academics, or with a student population that scored middling in high school and who lack a certain dynamism.
