The year was moving along and Charlie finished his Machinist - TopicsExpress

The year was moving along and Charlie finished his Machinist apprenticeship at the Sparrows Point Bethlehem Steel company. Charlie had been deferred from the , military draft until his apprenticeship was complete. He joined the navy after Mom and dad gave him a good talking too about being on a ship with a warm bed was so much better than laying in a foxhole in Northern France all during the cold European winter. He boarded a buss in front of the Dunkirk building and we all watched it round the corner and disappear heading to Bainbridge Maryland where he took his 6 weeks training. AT the end of his training he was a first class Machinist mate. A position that commanded some respect and authority. He came Home for two weeks and then headed to New York City to board the Queen Mary for his trip across the Atlantic. I am Not sure whether Craig went back to Bridge water before he took his boot training but I do know he went to Bridgewater before his trip to New York . He Came back bragging about Craigs Mother being so nice to him. Apparently he was quite taken with her as well. Craig and my Mom wrote a couple letters back and forth but that was about all. Mom and dad were very worried about my older brother, and so was I. There were local boys coming home in boxes. Mom and the girls could hardly mention his name with out getting tears in their eyes. He was stationed in England and we all thought he was there to be part of the D-day invasion of Normandy. Everybody knew it was coming sooner or later and everyone was dreading it as it was expected to be a blood bath. About five years before he died he told me a story that he said he had never told anyone because it was a military secret. He said he couldnt tell it but maybe I could someday. I will tell the story as soon as I get it together. I had read the story before that as it had been published. He said he didnt care as he had taken an oath not to tell it and he had made an exception just once. Doug
