The young woman working in customer service just stood there. Her customer, a woman much older, stood at the counter. She quickly became her witness, prosecuting attorney, and judge. The workers crime? She didnt greet this customer in a way that measured up to her expectations. I thought back to my earlier interaction with this clerk. No. She hadnt really greeted me or seemed to wear a happy to be here mask. If I had to make a guess she was either very shy or hurting. I listened. The manager was called but wasnt in. Names and numbers were taken and all the while the irate customer kept speaking loudly to the other clerk as if the first one was not there, I dont know if you all know what is up with her... The young woman stood through at least five minutes of her tirade with onlookers standing by silently. Her cheeks reddened. Humiliated, embarrassed, and perhaps feeling fairly cornered, she finely sidled out from behind the counter and disappeared down an aisle. All of this because the young woman didnt meet the expectation of her customer. You could soap box on the premise that she shouldnt be working in customer service if she is introverted, depressed , whatever, but that was her job yesterday. What if she was doing the level best with all she was going through at the time? What if she was giving what she had, only to be trounced and told how inadequate she was? What if this customer, whose family was with her and witnessed it all, would have smiled kindly and simply said, Hi, you seem quiet. Is everything okay?
