TheGreenFront presents: This Day in Climate History (hat tip to Joseph Romm and Peter Sinclair) December 8, 2005: New York Times columnist David Brooks observes that American conservatives ...have not effectively addressed the second-generation issues. Technological change has really changed the economy, introducing new stratifications. Inequality is rising. Wage stagnation is a problem. Social mobility is lagging, and globalization hurts hard-working people. Global warming is real (conservatives secretly know this). The health care system is ridiculous. Welfare reform is unfinished. Conservatives have not addressed these second-generation issues as effectively as their forebears addressed the first-generation ones. query.nytimes/gst/fullpage.html?res=9E04EEDC1031F93BA35751C1A9639C8B63 December 8, 2009: • The World Meteorological Organization reports that the years 2000-2009 are the warmest decade on record. wmo.int/pages/prog/wcp/wcdmp/documents/WMOStatement2009.pdf nytimes/2009/12/09/science/earth/09climate.html?_r=1&ref=global-home • MSNBCs Keith Olbermann calls out Wall Street Journal columnist Bret Stephens and the hosts of the Fox News Channel program Fox and Friends for shamelessly peddling climate-change denial. mediamatters.org/video/2009/12/08/worst-person-silver-to-fox-amp-friends-over-gra/157910 December 8, 2012: • UN delegates in Doha, Qatar agree to extend the Kyoto Protocol until 2020. articles.washingtonpost/2012-12-08/national/35701745_1_climate-talks-emissions-cuts-climate-change • David Roberts of Grist discusses the politics of fracking, and the growth of clean energy, on MSNBCs Up with Chris Hayes. grist.org/climate-energy/david-roberts-talks-fracking-on-msnbcs-up-with-chris-hayes/ grist.org/climate-energy/david-roberts-talks-renewable-energy-on-msnbcs-up-with-chris-hayes/ December 8, 2014: The Washington Post reports: Oil, gas and coal interests that spent millions to help elect Republicans this year are moving to take advantage of expanded GOP power in Washington and state capitals to thwart Obama administration environmental rules. Industry lobbyists made their pitch in private meetings last week with dozens of state legislators at a summit of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), an industry-financed conservative state policy group. The lobbyists and legislators considered several model bills to be introduced across the country next year, designed to give states more power to block or delay new Obama administration environmental standards, including new limits on power-plant emissions. The industry’s strategy aims to combat a renewed push by President Obama to carve out climate change as a top priority for his final two years in office. The White House has vowed to continue using executive authority to enact more environmental limits, and the issue is shaping up to be a major flash point heading into the 2016 presidential election. With support from industry lobbyists, many Republicans are planning to make the Environmental Protection Agency a primary political target, presenting it as a symbol of the kind of big-government philosophy they think can unify social and economic conservatives in opposition. washingtonpost/politics/fossil-fuel-lobbyists-bolstered-by-gop-wins-work-to-curb-environmental-rules/2014/12/07/3ef05bc0-79b9-11e4-9a27-6fdbc612bff8_story.html
